The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race and The Art of Tradition: My Journey in the 2025 Peachtree T-Shirt Design Contest

Every Fourth of July, runners from all walks of life gather in Atlanta for one of the most iconic road races in the Uinted States—the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) Peachtree Road Race . For over five decades, this 10K race has been more than just a test of endurance; it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and the spirit of Atlanta. And at the heart of that tradition lies an annual highlight that captures the imagination of artists and participants alike: the coveted Peachtree T-shirt design contest.

A Legacy Like No Other: The AJC Peachtree Road Race

Before diving into the details of the contest, let’s take a moment to appreciate the legacy of the Peachtree Road Race itself. Since its inception in 1970 with just 110 participants, the event has grown exponentially, drawing tens of thousands of runners each year. What makes it so special isn’t just the thrill of racing through Atlanta’s streets but also the sense of camaraderie among strangers united by shared goals and dreams.

For many, the finisher’s medal is a cherished keepsake. But perhaps even more iconic is the official Peachtree T-shirt—a wearable piece of art that commemorates the day. Each year, the winning design becomes a symbol of pride for those who complete the race, making the T-shirt contest not only prestigious but deeply meaningful.

Entering the Arena: The 2025 Peachtree T-Shirt Design Contest

When I first heard about the opportunity to submit a design for the 2025 contest, I knew I had to throw my hat into the ring. This wasn’t just another art competition—it was a chance to contribute to something bigger than myself. To create a design that would encapsulate the energy, diversity, and resilience of the Peachtree Road Race required careful thought and intentionality.

Inspiration Strikes

My creative process began with reflection. What does the Peachtree Road Race mean to me? How can I distill its essence into a single image? I thought about the early morning start times, the cheering crowds lining the route, and the breathtaking view of Atlanta’s skyline as runners approach the finish line. I also considered the themes of perseverance, unity, and joy that define the event.

I also thought of the many subjects that come out of Georgia such as, celebrities, musicians, film, literature (Gone with the Wind), Atlanta Braves, Hawks, etc. However I had to scratch thos graphics after re-reading the guidelines – so back to the drawing board!

I decided to incorporate elements that spoke to these ideas. My design features a dynamic runner mid-stride, silhouetted against a rising sun—a nod to the race’s July 4th timing and the hopefulness it inspires. Surrounding the figure are subtle nods to Atlanta’s rich cultural heritage, including peach blossoms (a tribute to Georgia’s state fruit) and geometric patterns inspired by the city’s vibrant arts scene and cheering crowds.

Balancing Creativity and Guidelines

Of course, creating a winning design isn’t just about inspiration—it’s also about adhering to the contest rules. Entries must be original, family-friendly, and suitable for printing on fabric. They should also reflect the spirit of the Peachtree Road Race while appealing to a wide audience. Striking this balance between personal vision and universal appeal was no small feat, but it pushed me to refine my concept until it felt truly representative of the event.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Participating in the Peachtree T-shirt design contest has been an incredible learning experience. Beyond honing my artistic skills, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the power of storytelling through visuals. Every stroke, every color choice carries meaning—and when done well, they can evoke emotions and connect people across generations.

Moreover, this process reminded me of the importance of tradition. Whether it’s the runners returning year after year or the artists vying to leave their mark, the Peachtree Road Race thrives because of its ability to blend continuity with innovation. It’s a reminder that traditions aren’t static—they evolve, adapt, and grow stronger with each new contribution.

Looking Ahead: Win or Lose, a Dream Realized

As I await the results of the contest, I find myself reflecting on the journey rather than the destination. Regardless of the outcome, simply having the opportunity to participate in such a storied tradition is a victory in itself. If my design is chosen, I’ll feel immense gratitude knowing that my work will become part of Peachtree lore. And if it isn’t, I’ll still celebrate the fact that I took a leap of faith and poured my heart into something I believe in.

To anyone considering entering future contests—or pursuing any dream, big or small—I encourage you to go for it. You never know where your efforts might lead, and sometimes the act of trying is reward enough.

Join Atlanta on Race Day!

Whether my design graces the shirts of 60,000 runners or remains a personal milestone, I’ll be watching the sea of participants on July 4, 2025. Together, we’ll run, cheer, and revel in the magic of the AJC Peachtree Road Race—a testament to the enduring power of tradition and community.

So here’s to the runners, the artists, and everyone who keeps the spirit of Peachtree alive. May we continue to honor the past while paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. See you at the starting line!

Below are my entries..... keep your fingers crossed!!
